Finally we can see DAV!D at the HUASA Show 2008!

Inspired by various things, this collection, Rouge Noir (named after the Chanel lipstick that I love so much now), is eclectic with different kinds of fabrics and textures to represent the richness in individualities, talents, looks of Africans, especially those in the diaspora.

I usually go from design to fabric but this time I reversed the process to see where it'll lead me. And where to? I feel like I was led to a place of 'power, determination and inherent royalty'.

I even took on a bigger challenge to go for deeper and duller prints as opposed to the bright and vibrant colors everywhere, so I could push my design buttons even more. Even with all the distracting Java and Woodin prints out there, I thought I'd focus more on what I'm here for- creating innovative, timeless pieces.

To say I have no regrets at all with this collection would be a litote. Rather, I LOVE this collection with ALL my heart! I only would have wished for impeccable sartorial skills so that those kick-ass drawings in my sketchbook would have been a reality for sure. I can only hope that I'll be sewing as good as Todd Lynn one day; that would be the DAY!

That being said, I put a slideshow of the collection below so I don't have to upload too many pix on here. Let me know your favorite looks. Enjoy!

PS:I haven't spoken to my mum since the show and I feel terrible. She's DAV!D's biggest fan! =(

not sure what i was expecting - but this wasn't it. and that's not a bad thing :) i'm warming up to it and i certainly appreciate your range as a designer. your other designs were more of an instant hit with me. and yes, i get the comparison with deola sagoe - your designs are edgy and sophisticated and you certainly have your own niche. this isn't just 'everyday' african print/fabric like i've mostly become bored with; there is an eagerness to step outside the mould that i admire and respect. you certainly had me doing a double-take on some of the pieces!

i look forward to more of dav!d's offerings in the near future. you've started remarkably well and i know you'll keep raising the bar. dav!d is very clearly destined for greatness...and you don't need to be prophetic to know that :)

congrats!

congrats Eni on the successful show.My fave DAV!D design is the very first in video. I think its a strong detailed design. The blue printed fabric works well with the black sequin fabric. Look forward to future collections.

The clothes were lovely....

Thank you guys... I needed to show that African fabric wasn't boring and that we could break out of the generic, mundane designs that flood the runways.

And it's only HouseOfStyle that mentioned her favorite look. All of you eh! lol

Hi!
I can't wait to nose around here! So far it looks like a lot of fun. I'm going over to cover Mercedes Benz Fashion Week LA. It's the first time I've ever written about fashion like this, so it'll be a huge learning curve. I hope I do ok. (Usually my beat is literature, books, and author interviews!). But my friend Naomi Goodsir, a designer in Sydney said I'm "fresh eyesm," that I'll take some angle others just won't. (I think she meant that in a good way!!).

Anyway, it's a pleasure to read your blog.

T'was nice meeting you. Although I was only able to see the clothes on the racks and not on the stage (I was backstage the whole time), they looked awesome.

Hi David,
I see you left a message on my group blog. You might pass by my personal blog, Easy-Writer, since it's got the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week L.A. on it.

miss DAV!D!!!
these are very creative and original designs and props to u!!!! I'm a big under-G fan lol
I have to say though, sometimes the colors on your dresses are a bit dull and some fabric don't just seem right...dont get me wrong though, i love your work. I just think some more creativity is needed in your choice of color and fabric.
good luck in everything!!
